Discovery Communications Knows Their Rights: Implements Partnership with RSG Media Systems

NEW YORK (BusinessWire EON) March 12, 2007 --     Applications to better manage media companies' rights have become increasingly critical due to increased contract complexity, use of third party content creators, the emergence of new distribution platforms, and additional reporting requirements. Generally, the process of identifying content and isolating airing restrictions has been an extremely manual process, one that requires legal departments to sift through paper contracts to identify any possible use limitations. Automated centralized applications serve to maximize the use of cleared content and minimize risk of misuse.

Doug Coblens, Executive Vice President, Legal & Business Affairs at Discovery comments, "Discovery has been in the forefront of creating cutting-edge content and delivering it across multiple platforms across the globe. We now have in place a system that will enable us to react even quicker to market demand by isolating in real-time what is available, when it is available, and what are the obligations for its use".

Mukesh Sehgal, President and CEO of RSG Media Systems, adds, "We are extremely pleased to have partnered with a company like Discovery to deliver our latest release of RightsLogic. By working with their business users and IT department, we feel that we have an application that will facilitate media companies taking full advantage of all of the new revenue opportunities."

As media companies seek to re-purpose their content for use on platforms such as the internet, mobile phones, VOD, and DVDs, there can a bottle neck in understanding exactly what is cleared for use. A piece of music may be available to use in a particular program, but can it be used on the same program on a mobile phone in a particular Asian country? How about selling the program on iTunes? Program and rights management applications store the data surrounding particular titles and elements within these titles. These are then associated to deals which define their usage. The specific contracts terms are synthesized down to individual fields, making them searchable by a party looking to utilize content on a particular platform.

Eloise McNeal, Executive Vice President, Software Solutions, Discovery Communications Inc, explains, "It is critical for our business to have developed a centralized repository in which we can associate rights information to all assets, including programs, footage, releases, music, and talent. The successful launch of RightsLogic was the direct result of the close partnership between Discovery Legal, Discovery IT and RSG Media Systems. The end result is an easy-to-use application that allows us to maximize the use of our intellectual property rights."
